No fewer than 13 individuals perish and ninety-eight hurt in rail accident in the nation of Mexico.

A deadly train derailment in the Mexican state of Oaxaca has claimed the lives of at least 13 people, an incident expected to reignite censure from critics regarding the pace and handling of the country's major public works projects.

The accident occurred on the Interoceanic Train, a line developed to link the Atlantic and Pacific across the thinnest stretch of the Isthmus of Tehuantepec. This initiative was created to provide an alternative rail cargo route to the Panama Canal, with the goal of spurring economic development in the area.

“We shall rigorously clarify what caused this incident,” declared the country's president.

The official reported that, of the approximately 250 people on board, another 98 were injured, with five of those in serious condition. The official noted plans to travel to Oaxaca to meet those impacted.

Flagship Project of Former Government

The Interoceanic Train was a signature public works project of the previous administration, whose presidency ended the year before. This venture was intimately linked to his administration's economic goals for the southeastern region.

Another multi-billion dollar train initiative from that era, a tourist and cargo loop around the Yucatán Peninsula, was also central to the comprehensive effort to stimulate the economic fortunes of a comparatively less developed part of the country.

Project Execution and Worries

The development of both railway systems was overseen by the armed forces, marking a significant growth of its responsibilities in public projects. They were built at an rapid speed, beating expectations to be partially opened before the end of that government.

However, this fast-paced schedule had also fueled significant concerns over operational security.

  • Sunday's crash was the third occurrence on the Interoceanic Train this year.
  • This involves an previous collision this month when a train struck a truck at a crossing.
  • The other major rail project has also had a couple of non-fatal derailments.

Appeals for Investigation and Halt

In the aftermath of the disaster, the leader of a major opposition party demanded an immediate pause in the building and running of all such projects.

This pause was requested while awaiting a comprehensive safety audit. The party declared that the tragedy "demands swift accountability."

In response, the president asserted that the train had been operating in complete compliance with all security protocols. Assurances were given that the government would remain "diligent" in both the construction and management of these national initiatives.
